Ask questions, are curious about the world around them
Use what they know, link with something new, build on other people’s ideas
Follow directions, express feelings, thoughts and ideas in words, mathematics, art and music
Learn more about themselves and the world around them
Are willing to make mistakes, prepared to try new things, willing to try and do things in different ways
Are honest, make good decisions, are responsible learners
Recognise they are part of a group, are thoughtful, help others
Listen to other people’s thoughts and ideas, accept that there is more than one way to look at things
Learn more about the importance of being healthy, use time wisely, are organised
Think about what they do and say, think about their learning, think about different ways things could have been done
The International Baccalaureate® aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.
These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.
What is the PYP?
The Primary Years Programme is the curriculum framework by which the Australian Curriculum is delivered at Our Saviour Lutheran School. The highly rigorous standards demanded by the International Baccalaureate (IB) ensure that our students are given the very best opportunities to prepare for their future world. Learning is engaging, student-focussed and comprehensive. Everything we do is within a Christian worldview with a strong commitment to our mission. This curriculum equips students with knowledge, skills, behaviours and dispositions that apply across learning areas, equipping them to be confident, lifelong learners in the complex, globalized world of the 21st Century.
The IB Primary Years Programme is designed for students aged 3 to 12 years. It focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside. It is defined by six transdisciplinary themes of global significance, explored using knowledge and skills derived from six subject areas, with a powerful emphasis on inquiry-based learning.
Of great significance is the PYP commitment to fostering our students as learners. The PYP learner profile addresses qualities in our students that we need to actively encourage, qualities that best prepare them for lifelong learning, for roles in the future that may not even exist yet. Students are encouraged to bring their passion for learning into the classroom. PYP recognizes and values their curiosity. It is designed to foster the development of the whole child. The PYP aims to touch hearts as well as minds and encompasses social, physical, emotional and cultural needs of the developing child in addition to academic welfare.
As teachers today, our role is to ask and encourage questioning, challenge students to think and help them to make connections for themselves. Learning at Our Saviour will look engaging and complex, as well as active and fun because as the research tells us, this approach is the way our children learn best.

Learning is a life-long journey and forms the very heart of what it means to be a school. At Our Saviour, we teach to harness the abilities of students so that they can make meaning of their world and of all the knowledge and information that is made available to them.
Our small class sizes and specialist support staff ensure that the needs of individual students are identified and every effort is made to help them develop in each area of the curriculum. In search of excellence, our students are expected to treat each other and their teachers with respect and consideration, enabling the classes to be environments where all students feel safe and able to learn.
Individual students have different learning abilities and needs. Differentiation, the process of tailoring learning to the ability of students, is a part of the teaching strategies adopted in the classroom. We also have a Special Needs team who develop Individual Learning Plans for students and also look at extension activities for those requiring to be challenged at a higher level.
The Australian national curriculum document enunciates the learning standards and outcomes for each year level as well as the assessment and reporting requirements. In addition, we have adopted the Primary Years Programme of the International Baccalaureate as the curriculum through which we explore an inquiry-based teaching methodology. By valuing the previous experiences and understandings of our students, we are then able to expose students to new ideas and harness their enthusiasm and excitement to capture learning opportunities. What an exciting place to be!
